Resumes, Cover Letters, and Interviews: How Sharp Are Your Tools?

Will your cover letter get your resume read? Will your resume get you an interview? Will your interview get you the job you want?

How will you know if youve written the right introduction or used the best words to describe your skills and experience?

You may be able to recite your list of career-related activities, but can you talk about yourself in a professional way that displays your interest in a job and makes a recruiter want to hire you?

Colleges and universities today offer a wide variety of career courses, says Amy Raphael, director of career planning and placement services at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. You can prepare for the world of work in special workshops or seminars or in a career development class that cover topics such as resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, networking, and budgeting skills.

Contact the career center at your school and participate in some of these workshops. Then, use one of the following rubrics to check your work before you ask a career counselor to critique you cover letters or resume. You can use the interview rubric to critique mock—practice—interviews that you can arrange through the career center.
